Be Aware of Children with Speech Delay

It must be every parent wish to have healthy children and are physically, emotionally and socially growing well.

One of the important parameters of children’s development is the speech development. Speech and language development are an initial indication to know whether there is any brain or nerve disorders that can cause behavioral and learning disruption. It is important for Moms to recognize speech delay on the children so it can be treated as early as possible.

Here is a guide for Moms to be able to observe the children’s development process in terms of speaking:

At the age of 12 months they haven’t been able to babble or imitate sound yet

Normally, at the age of 4-6 months, children are able to babble some words like ‘papapa’ or ‘dadada’ and at the age of 12 months, they begin to understand simple instructions or can give some greetings.

At the age of 18 months they can’t say any meaningful words yet

Generally, at the age of 18 months children have understood 6-10 words already.

Children aged 24 months (2 years old) only know less than 10 words

At this age, children should be able to say up to 300 words even though some words may be meaningless. They also should be able to use 2-3 phrases and understand the use of the word ‘I’.

Children aged 30 months to 3 years old can’t string 2 words yet

At this age, children should be able to ask question with a quite long sentence. The sentence used is clear and understandable.

Based on the above guidance, If Moms find any suspicions that the children are having speech delay, consult a pediatrician immediately, so they can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.
